Palm Vein Authentication Leverages Innovative Biometric Technology to Deliver Enhanced Access Control while Simplifying Security Management

Foothill Ranch, CA and Dallas, TX – ASIS 2010, October 12, 2010 — Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc., a leading provider of IT-based business solutions, including advanced technology products, biometric security, and digital media solutions, today announced the deployment of its PalmSecure™ palm vein biometric authentication technology at Vantage Data Centers’ Santa Clara campus. Vantage Data Centers provides energy-efficient, scalable, wholesale data center solutions to enterprise customers. The PalmSecure highly accurate, comprehensive, multi-factor biometric identification and access control capabilities allow Vantage is able to protect proprietary information and costly infrastructure throughout its campus while ensuring that only privileged personnel are able to access to secure areas. PalmSecure solution will be showcased at the Fujitsu booth, #4412 and the Johnson Controls Booth, #3320, at ASIS International 56th Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2010), taking place October 12-14, 2010 at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

Due to the extremely sensitive data and expensive infrastructures stored at Vantage Data Centers, security represents a primary concern for customers and key objective for Vantage. The PalmSecure technology offers up to three factors of authentication in a single unit installation, as well as a bonus capability of an alternate factor of authentication via registration of the user’s second hand. As a result, Vantage can require biometric authentication for all ingress points and layer additional factors of authentication as needed, specifically in mission-critical areas. For example, a customer needing to enter the front door to the building would do so via biometric authentication. The same customer needing access to a mission-critical area would then need to biometrically authenticate and provide up to two more factors of authentication, including key-pad code and/or smart card. The application of this comprehensive, multi-factor technology allows Vantage to meet customer security demands and support various compliance regulations.

“By offering industry-leading identity and access management, we are able to protect the entire data center facility and customer assets with the highest level of security,” said Jim Trout, CEO of Vantage Data Centers. “We reviewed the prevailing biometric technologies implemented in the data center industry, including fingerprint readers and retinal scanners, and found that both provide challenges to customers unfamiliar with these security measures due to concerns over personal harm and improper use. The Fujitsu PalmSecure technology, however, delivers optimal capabilities and level of user comfort unmatched in our search and we are delighted with the results.”

“The need for biometric authentication solutions is clear; however, we’ve seen products on the market that present signification challenges in terms of accuracy, enrollment difficulty and residual trace issues,” said Vic Herring, vice president of sales and marketing, Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc. “PalmSecure addresses these challenges head on, providing customers with a proven biometric authentication solution for access security management that is highly accurate, easy to enroll and contactless. We are honored to be chosen by Vantage Data Centers to safeguard its assets, secure areas and facilities.”

The Fujitsu PalmSecure sensor uses a near-infrared light to capture a person’s palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users’ palm vein patterns. This advanced, contactless biometric technology generates rapid and highly accurate authentication that is virtually impossible to forge, leaves no biometric trace behind following authentication, and is not affected by the presence of hand lotions, chemicals, abrasions, skin conditions or cold environment effects.

The deployment at Vantage’s Santa Clara campus is the result of a collaboration between Fujitsu and BioGuard Components and Technologies Ltd., which specializes in biometric systems design and manufacturing. BioGuard developed a physical access control solution that leverages the award-winning PalmSecure palm vein authentication technology. The joint solution delivers best-in-class ID management and physical access control that is highly secure, affordable and easy to install. The turn-key solution offers a complete integrated package for customers who wish to upgrade their access control systems while utilizing existing infrastructure and resource investments.

“We have worked closely with Fujitsu to optimize the PalmSecure authentication technology with our accelerator and middleware solutions,” said Shalom Shushan, president and CEO of BioGuard. “Our hardware and software development team created a new platform designed to ensure the functionality of PalmSecure biometric that seamlessly integrates into Vantage Data Centers’ campus and facility. Not only is Vantage’s facility more secure, but also users are no longer required to carry smartcards, eliminating threats posed by stolen smartcards and reducing cost associated with smartcard replacement. The result is a win-win for Vantage and for our joint Fujitsu/BioGuard solution.”

Auto Theft and Physical Access Control

Motor vehicle theft is a serious problem that causes losses in the millions of dollars to private individuals and companies each year. Motor vehicle theft includes the stealing of automobiles, trucks, buses, and motorcycles. Stolen automobiles are used in the commission of many serious crimes including bank robbery, criminal escape attempts, and terrorist bombings. Traditional security methods include the standard key, as well as additional anti-theft hardware such as steering wheel and brake pedal locks, and electronic access control devices such as immobilizing devices with ignition cutoffs and starter and fuel system disablers. Another level of security might add electronic tracking devices. The electronic access control and tracking devices increases the options for protecting and granting access to a vehicle, and replaces the mechanical lock and key method with credential based control that give an added measure of management and security to the vehicle. Management software must administer a database of users and control who, where, and when to grant access.

The access authentication method must be secure. A biometric access control system that grants or denies access based on the reliable and established fingerprint technology is one of the most secure and foolproof methods for a credential based authentication approach to access control. This simple biometric solution facilitates a dependable access control system to increase security for both private vehicles and large commercial trucking and leasing industries.

Fingerprint Technology

Fingerprint technology has been around for a long time and is a sophisticated and verified form of identification. It has been used in criminal investigations for almost a hundred years. In fact, a fingerprint is so unique that it remains unchanged throughout a person’s lifetime. It is a human beings built in identity card. Combining fingerprint identification with modern scanning technology, a simple cost effective access control solution is created. A fingerprint scanner captures the unique fingerprint pattern and stores it on a database. The stored fingerprints serve as the basis for various levels of access control software to meet the requirements of a private user or business.

The CarGuard Physical Access Control System

The CarGuard access control system takes advantage of the captured fingerprint by analyzing the sample and comparing it to the other sample images stored. A person trying to gain access passes his finger through the high performance fingerprint scanner. The cutting edge scanner reads the fingerprint from the live tissue layer eliminating any problems associated with skin conditions or fake fingers. The CarGuard system performs a 1:N matching procedure on the acquired fingerprint which compares the input fingerprint with the information in the database. If there is a match, the person can gain access or not depending on the level of clearance assigned. The CarGuard system performs identification and matching exceptionally well and offers low false accept and false reject rates. If the driver is not enrolled in the system the CarGuard system prevents ignition of the engine. The system is connected to a GSM tracking device in case the vehicle is stolen by towing the vehicle.

The management features of the CarGuard system can be tailored to the specific needs of the user. A standalone system can be installed for small private usage, while a large business system may require many users. The CarGuard access control system is offered as the Silver model and the Gold model. The Silver model is ideal for private use or a small business needs while the Gold model is the large business model. In standalone mode, the unit controls the remote relays used to disconnect the engine/fuel. In managed mode, the unit is connected to a GSM modem which enables monitoring of drivers and unit management from a remote fleet management control center.

The CarGuard application software is modeled to accommodate the various requirements of the home or business. The database management software varies in complexity based on the levels of security required. The administrator or manager of the security system designates when a person is cleared for access. The administrator can enroll and add new users, delete users, and manage the user templates. Different levels of security clearance and privileges can be assigned to each user.

The CarGuard devices are connected remotely via the GSM modem so that the administrator can view the IP Address, unit ID and status of each device on the network. By connecting to a specific IP Address, the administrator can list all the users on that specific CarGuard device, add or delete users, add privileges to a user, and add a user from the local database to that specific device.

The CarGuard access control system provides a log of all users who tried to gain access through any CarGuard device. The log is saved whether the access was successful or not. The log shows the time of access and the ID of the worker.

CarGuard is an affordable fingerprint identification access control system perfect for the home and business. The user friendly system provides a full access management solution. The CarGuard provides an affordable access control system to ensure unsurpassed security and ease of use. It offers an effective simple to operate security solution for vehicle owners looking to protect their investment.

System Highlights

An iris scan provides an analysis of the rings, furrows and freckles in the colored ring that surrounds the pupil of the eye. More than 200 points are used for comparison. This technology is widely considered the most reliable form of biometric identification. Like a retina scan, an iris scan also provides unique biometric data that is very difficult to duplicate and remains the same for a lifetime. The scan is similarly difficult to make (particularly for children or the disabled).

People need to spend only seconds in front of an ordinary digital camera. Face recognition systems work by systematically analyzing specific features that are common to everyone’s face – the distance between the eyes, width of the nose, position of cheekbones, jaw line, chin and so forth. As faces change over time, an as they can be altered By surgery, masks and makeup, this is not a highly accurate method.

This system uses an infrared beam to penetrate the users hand as it is held over the sensor; the veins within the palm of the user are returned as black lines. Palm vein authentication has a high level of authentication accuracy due to the uniqueness and complexity of vein patterns of the palm. Because the palm vein patterns are internal to the body, this is a difficult method to forge. Also, the system is contactless and hygienic for use in public areas.

One of the most widely known and used biometric identification scheme is fingerprint. Fingerprint analysis and identification is a 100-year old science, with thousands of studies made and articles written, and thus confidence rates of more than 99%. It’s the cheapest, fastest, most convenient and most reliable way to identify someone. That’s why fingerprint alone has almost 60% of the biometric world market, according to the Biometrics Market and Industry Report 2007-2012 from the International Biometric Group. Cars, cell phones, PDAs, personal computers and dozens of products and devices are using fingerprints more and more. Fingerprint recognition can be used from criminal investigations to time attendance systems, in a movie rental or in a police identification institute.

A fingerprint contain a number of unique physical characteristics called minutiae, which includes certain visible aspects of fingerprints such as ridges, ridge endings and bifurcations (forks in ridges). Minutiae are generally found in the core points of fingerprints, located near the center of the fingertips. These characteristics are used to distinguish two fingerprints, or to state that they are the same. Even identical twins have different fingerprints.

There are a number of different ways to get an image of a fingerprint, and the most common methods today for electronic fingerprint readers are optical scanning and capacitance scanning. When a fingerprint is applied to – or passed over – the sensor window of the fingerprint reader, the fingerprint is scanned and a gray-scale image is captured. A special computer software then identifies the key minutiae points from the image. These points are then converted into a unique digital representation, called “template”, comparable to a very big password.

When a fingerprint enrollment is done, only the fingerprint template is stored, not the actual image of the fingerprint. The fingerprint template is not only smaller than the finger image, but also faster to process when comparing two fingerprints.

Fingerprint recognition technology is divided into two distinct processes: verification and identification.

In the verification process the user states who he/she is and a fingerprint is taken and compared to the user’s previously registered fingerprint. If the fingerprints match, the user is “verified” as who he/she says he/she is. Since the newly acquired fingerprint is compared to only one stored fingerprint, this is called a one-to-one matching process (1:1). As in the enrollment process, when a fingerprint verification is done, only the fingerprint template is used in the comparison, not the actual image of the fingerprint.

In the identification process the user doesn’t need to state who he/she is. A fingerprint is taken and compared to each fingerprint in the database of registered users. When a match occurs, the user is “identified” as the existing user the system found. Since the newly acquired fingerprint is compared to many stored fingerprints, this is called a one-to-many matching process (1:N). As in the verification process, when a fingerprint identification is done, only the fingerprint template is used in the comparison, not the actual image of the fingerprint.

Although it may appear to be a simple process, fingerprint recognition involves the state-of-the-art technology in hardware, for the readers, and software, to process the fingerprint images and templates. But due to the effort of the hardware and software makers, all this complexity is hidden and fingerprint technology usage is nowadays as simple as touching the reader.
